The Australian Conservation Foundation has called on the Government to set a greenhouse reduction target, increase the mandatory renewable energy target to 10% by 2010, implement an energy efficiency target of 50% by 2025, and bring in emissions trading.

CSIRO research has found that rainfall in the southern parts of Australia has dropped by 10% in the past 50 years. Some scientists think ozone depletion may be responsible for the change.

The Australian Government is expects greenhouse gas emissions not to be far off Kyoto targets over the next decade. A reduction in land clearing has been the main area of improvement. The Government remains against ratification of the Kyoto Protocol.
