Between 2000 and 2002, the amount of industrial waste being disposed of in New South Wales rose from 45,000 to 65,000 tonnes. According to Environment Protection Authority figures, there was also a massive spike in waste levels in 2001 after the Sydney Olympic Games. The Total Environment Centre has called on industry to adopt cleaner and more efficient production processes.

The New South Wales Government has announced mandatory water restrictions. While dams supplying Sydney are still 5.5% above the usual trigger levels for restrictions, Premier Bob Carr said the state needed to act before temperatures and water use increased.
