The public will be given six-weeks to comment on the direction of Australia’s National Reserve System. The Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council has released a paper outlining a partnership approach to achieving a comprehensive, adequate and representative reserve system.

River Murray Water advised today that salinity levels in the River Murray near Wentworth and further downstream are expected to temporarily rise in coming weeks as flow from the lower Darling River resumes.

A $25.7 million State and Federal funding package for tackling salinity in South Australia has been announced. A significant portion of the funding will go to salt interception initiatives in the Murray Darling Basin.

The Australian Conservation Foundation has called for an end to the deliberate discharge of mine wastes to groundwater at the General Atomics Beverley acid leach uranium mine in South Australia. The ACF also wants a commitment to rehabilitation of the area.

It has taken local authorities days to clean up a 600 litre fuel spill Swanston Dock in Melbourne. The Environment Protection Authority believes the spill has had minimal impact on the environment, but the ship’s captain may still face charges.
