Climate experts have today warned that if Australia makes no effort to cut carbon dioxide emissions, bushfires in the future will become increasingly more common. Higher temperatures and drier climates due to global warming could lead to a 100 to 200 per cent rise in the number of bushfires.

The Federal Government has pledged $80 million for a 22 kilometre pipeline that will link the Mardi and Mangrove Creek dams by 2010. It is designed to drought-proof the areas of Gosford and Wyong on the New South Wales central coast.

A new report has revealed that the EU is the world’s major importer of wildlife products, both legal and illegal. The report highlighted the need for the EU to ensure that high demand does not lead to over-exploitation in the environments where the products originate.

A court win by The Wilderness Society today means that no decisions will be made about the Gunns’ proposed pulp mill until August 6th. The delay will allow for a case to be made against the mill, which “would have a devastating impact on Tasmania’s native forests and the rare and threatened animals that rely on them for a home,” a representative for The Wilderness Society said.

The first binturong cub to be bred in captivity in Taronga zoo was released into a public enclosure yesterday. The female cub, named Indah, is now one month old.

Opposition leader Kevin Rudd says the Australian people will “not be fooled” by a planned government advertising blitz on climate change. While the Prime Minister has repeatedly denied approving any such campaign, he has admitted that over $50 million has been set aside in the budget “to increase community understanding”.
