Friends of the Earth wants the Coalition to clarify its stance on nuclear power, after Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull appeared to contradict the Coalition’s pro-nuclear policy. FoE have created a website (www.votenuclearfree.net) to rate the main political parties on their nuclear policies and alert the public to each party’s stated stance on the different nuclear issues.

An environmental impact statement revealed that clearing land to build the dam will result in 96,545 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as releasing 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually once filled. The Greens have criticised the report for miscalculations and failing to account for other environmental issues.

More than one hundred Wollemi pine trees and seedlings have been planted in a Central Coast park in a bid to reproduce a colony near the Blue Mountains. The pine was thought to be extinct until rediscovered in 2004.
