The Wilderness Society is hoping new Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Tony Burke, will do more to permanently protect Tasmania’s forests. The Minister is currently touring the southern island state’s forest areas to see what is going on first hand.

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics has released a report predicting that growth in energy consumption by industry will slow dramatically over the next two decades.

According to the Australian Conservation Foundation, the recently adopted Bali roadmap shows that all countries recognise the science behind the global warming problem and a promising start to two years of tough negotiations on emissions reduction targets.

The latest draft agreement at the Bali climate summit, which wraps up today, will not require industrialized nations to meet any specific emissions targets by 2020. Tough greenhouse emissions reduction targets have been dropped from the draft following pressure from the United States delegation. However, the United States has so far been unsuccessful in pushing responsibility for cuts onto poorer nations.

The University of Melbourne is a key partner in the newly opened $3.7m Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) research facility, based in Horsham, Victoria. FACE uses state-of-the-art technology to simulate elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels to help predict the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity.

That’s what the new Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, says about the agreement on action on Climate Change the community of nations must reach and act upon.
Speaking at the Bali conference on Climate Change, Mr Rudd also said, “Australia now stands ready to assume its responsibility in responding to this challenge - both at home and in the negotiations that lie ahead across the community of nations.”

A report by Environment Victoria and several leading conservation groups is highly critical of the Victorian State Government’s failure to make progress on many of the environment promises made during the last state election.
