This international congress brings together organisations and people interested in sustainable energy and its role in urban environments.
The Congress is a part of the International Solar Cities Initiative, which aims to support UN energy and climate policies by stimulating the interest of cities in committing to ambitious emission reduction goals; help cities systematically integrate renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and industries into environmental, economic and city planning; and provide scientific support for the validation and design of effective measures and policies for Solar Cities.
The Congress will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, Feb 17-21, 2008.

The past year has seen more weather records smashed as extreme events take hold of the planet, said WWF in a climate overview presented at the start of the UN climate change conference in Bali, Indonesia. According to Hans Verolme, Director of WWF’s Global Climate Change Programme, increasing floods, droughts and forest fires “show the urgent need to take decisive action on climate change.”

The latest UN sponsored climate conference has begun in Bali, Indonesia. More than 180 nations are attending the conference to discuss the treats posed by global warming and how they might be mitigated. It is expected that particular attention will be given to the dire warning contained in the most recent IPCC report.

Australia’s new Prime Minister has officially signed an instrument of ratification document for the Kyoto Protocol, which will be processed by the United Nations and it comes into effect 90 days after that. On signing the document, PM Kevin Rudd said Australia will officially join Kyoto Protocol as a full participating member before March 2008.

Abnormal high tides in Hobart’s South Arm have forced birds to relocate from shore to road. The displacement results in some birds being run over by passing motor vehicles. South Arm has been experiencing extraordinary levels of high tides for the past six weeks and is speculated to be the result of climate change.
