Government answers WWF with $180 million for species protectionLink to full story

The government has announced that it will pledge $180 million to help buy more land to convert into parks and reserves after a report published by WWF showed that it was failing to protect the habitats of Australia’s wildlife. The report stated only 10% of Australia’s land is protected, a figure lower than many developing countries. The Government will be targeting land most affected by climate change says Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett.

The Earth is seeing a “human-induced mass extinction event”, creating a new geological era, according to Prof Will Steffen, an environmental scientist and director of the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies at Canberra’s Australian National University.
