Calls to stop coal mining under Sydney water catchment
ABC News
The NSW Government has been called upon by the Greens to put an end to the expansion of longwall coal mining under the Sydney water catchment - within 500 metres of the Cataract Dam near Wollongong by Indian-owned mining company, Gujurat NRE. It has been said by Greens MP Lee Rhiannon, that mining so close to the dam could cause the walls to crack and river beds to dry up. This could then lead to surface gas leaks with previous experience in the southern coal fields demonstrating dramatic cases where river beds have cracked.
