Scientists name over 100 new sharks and rays
CSIRO
Over 100 new species of sharks and rays have been named and described, in an 18-month project completed by Australian scientists working under CSIRO. Team leader, Dr Peter Last, said new taxonomic knowledge is crucial in helping to conserve sharks and rays, which are particularly susceptible to human impacts such as overfishing. Among the new species classified are the Northern Freshwater Whipray, the Northern River Shark, the Endangered Maugean Skate, and the Critically Endangered gulper shark, the Southern Dogfish.
