Australian think tanker, Clive Hamilton, says the symbolic nature of Earth Hour must not lull the public into the misconception that good progress is being made on climate change. Hamilton says that Earth Hour can only be truly successful if it leads to real action. Earth Hour takes place next Saturday evening at 8.30pm and organisers hope one billion people around the globe will switch off.

Australia’s Environment Minister Peter Garrett has given conditional approval to the Victorian Government’s proposed desalination plant near Wonthaggi. Garrett imposed a key condition requiring the State Government to develop management strategies to minimise the impacts of the plant on protected species in the area.

Friends of the Earth has called a public forum to discuss Victoria’s water future in the wake of the state’s devastating bushfires. Discussion will focus on the impact of the fires for Victoria’s water policy, specifically questions about the need for a desalination plant and North-South pipeline.

Teams of volunteers are invited to ride bikes to generate power for Melbourne’s Earth Hour Concert during the Future Spark Team Challenge. Future Spark will run from 8am-7pm each day from the 23rd to the 28th of March, 2009, at Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia.
