Already poor farmers in developing nations in southern Asia, Africa and the Middle East will suffer the most from global warming according to a research paper from Denmark’s Copenhagen Consensus Center. The paper also estimates the world will need to spend at least $16.8 billion on climate adaptation measures for agriculture in these areas.

Australia’s first ever comprehensive analysis of water resources based on 30 years of on-ground and satellite observations has revealed that water availability diminished dramatically in the mid-1990s and has not recovered, particularly in the southeastern states.
According to the CSIRO, the impact of the drought on Australia’s current water resources is broadly consistent with both the historical trend and climate change predictions; and despite record low rainfalls in parts of the country over recent years, the drought may still be within natural limits.

Earth Jurisprudence calls for a radical shift to our legal system, from a human-only orientation to an Earth centered approach. Friends of the Earth, in partnership with the University of Adelaide, Faculty of Professions, Research Unit for the Study of Society, Law and Religion (RUSSLR), and the Conservation Council of South Australia will host Australia’s first conference on Earth Jurisprudence in Adelaide from October 16-18, 2009.

Politicians are disputing the proximity of the Timor Sea oil slick to the Australian coast. Federal Resources Minister Martin Ferguson says Greens Senator Rachel Siewert is wrong to claim that the spill is just 20km from Western Australia’s Kimberley coast. According to Ferguson, the real distance is closer to 150km and he believes the pollution should disperse naturally.
