The Coalition’s proposed amendments to the Labor Government’s Emissions Trading Scheme will protect big polluters through significant concessions. Unlike Labor’s proposed five years of guaranteed targets with a gateway of another five years for business - the Coalition seeks to reframe that in two sets of ten years. The amendments also include the power to allocate new power projects five years of free emissions, as well as hydrofluorocarbons to be excluded. Labor has said it will continue to look at the amendments in good faith despite outrage from environmentalists.

The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme legislation reintroduced to parliament will be welcomed by polluters and mourned by those who want progress on climate change, according to Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne. The government has sidelined the evidence based views of prominent scientists and economists, according to Ms Milne.

The Federal Government has reintroduced the ETS Bill into the lower house of parliament.  The bill was rejected by the senate three months ago.  The Government is threatening to hold a double dissolution election should the Bill be voted down by the Upper House for a second time.

Independent analysis sourced by the Greens in the weeks following the Montara oil spill suggest that the wellhead may be leaking up to 3,000 barrels of oil-a-day into the Timor Sea off Australia’s north-west coast.  The government disputes this figure, placing the leak at 300-400 barrels a day, but has not revealed its sources for this figure.

Reports have come out that only 58 of the 44 000 applicants for ‘green loans’ had received the results of their applications as of September. Despite multiple ‘glitches’ in the federal government delaying the scheme this year, a spokesperson for the Environment Minister Peter Garrett has told the media that ”nothing to date suggests that program targets will not be met.”

The Southern Cross Climate Coalition (SCCC) does not support the Coalition’s proposed amendments to the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, saying the amendments are actually going backwards. The SCCC urged the Rudd Government to reject the amendments until they have been substantially changed to strengthen the CPRS.
