A Federal Government study of grey nurse sharks has determined the species is in dangerously low numbers to the point of endangerment. Marine experts have called for the immediate protection of the species through sanctuaries.

Australia’s Environment Minister Peter Garrett has announced a new program to help improve the energy and water efficiency of low-income and disadvantaged Australian households. The $130 million program will provide free home assessments, as well as installation of energy and water efficiency products such as pipe insulation, efficient light bulbs, low-flow showerheads, draught proofing, seals for fridges, doors and windows, grey water hoses and compost bins.

Five senior Liberal Party frontbenchers and senators have resigned their portfolios over a vote on the proposed emissions trading scheme. The Liberal Party and leader Malcolm Turnbull were left in crisis today after Tony Abbott, Tony Smith, Sophie Mirabella and Senators Eric Abetz and Nick Minchin all stepped down in protest.

Two of Tasmania’s endangered bird species, the swift parrot and the 40-spotted pardelote, appear to be in serious decline, concerning experts and conservationists alike. Urban development, drought and wildfires are believed to be the main causes of the alarming falls in population.

While New South Wales battles bushfires in tinderbox conditions, neighbouring Victoria is bracing for flash flooding. Hot and windy conditions in NSW made 140 blazes across the state difficult for firefighters to handle on Saturday. That night, parts of Victoria received up to 75mm of rain.

Carbon dioxide emissions from human activities rose to an all-time high of 1.3 tonnes of carbon per capita per year, according to scientists from the internationally respected climate research group, the Global Carbon Project. The research indicates that rising emissions from fossil fuels last year were caused mainly by increased use of coal.
