Conservation groups condemn NSW marine parks moratorium

The New South Wales State Government’s support for a Marine Parks Amendment (Moratorium) Bill has been condemned by an alliance of 38 conservation organisations as a “dangerous set back for marine conservation”. The proposed five?year moratorium on new marine parks in New South Wales would prevent further action to protect aquatic habitats that provide a home to diverse marine life, including rare and threatened species. The groups opposing the Bill claim to represent more than 590,000 Australians.

Greens promise residential and commercial water efficiency standards

The Australian Greens will be hoping to have more representatives after the federal election to act on their pledge to introduce national mandatory water efficiency standards for residential and commercial buildings. Greens Victorian Senate candidate Richard Di Natale believes the hard work by householders to conserve water needs to be matched with better government regulation that bring all buildings into line.

BP counts financial cost of Gulf spill

BP has spent $US6.1 billion to date on the emergency response to the unprecedented oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and in grants to affected states, according to the company. BP previously agreed to establish an uncapped $US20 billion compensation fund on top of the money it is spending to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and separate to fines the company may have to pay for the disaster.

Voters want more funding for conservation

A new nation-wide poll commissioned by ACF and WWF has found 75% of Australians support increasing the share of the nation’s budget currently spent on nature conservation. Currently, only 1% of Australia’s budget is spent on protecting the natural environment.

BP finally seals disastrous oil leak

BP has finally plugged the gushing oil well that was blown open when its Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The well has been filled with cement. Oil spilled from the well in deep water for 106 days, causing the United States of America’s worst ever environmental disaster.

Major parties still lagging far behind Greens on environmental policy

The Australian Conservation Foundation has released its 2010 Federal Election Scorecard, rating the Greens miles ahead of the major parties in every key area. The ACF has commended Greens’ policy commitments to cut pollution, invest in efficient public transport, make clean energy cheaper and protect oceans.
