China becomes biggest investor in clean energyLink to full story

Data compiled by the Pew Environment Group shows China invested $54.4 billion in low-carbon power generation technology in 2010, making it the biggest investing nation in the sector. China’s added investment pushed it past Germany into the top ranking. Germany invested $41.2 billion during the same year, and the United States followed with $34 billion (representing a more than 50% increase over the previous year). Overall, the low-carbon energy sector (excluding nuclear power) saw investment rise globally by 30% in 2010, to a total of $243 billion.

Co-founder Andy Ridley said Earth Hour is not really about the amount of power saved during the hour, but about what can happen when people work together. This year organisers asked that people also commit to an environmental action that they will continue throughout the year.

The rare Spotted-Tailed Quoll has been discovered south of Eden in New South Wales. The species was photographed in the Nadgee Nature Reserve, while the only other record of the species was made 20 years previously on the edges of the reserve. Dr Andrew Claridge, ecologist with The National Parks and Wildlife Services, says this is a significant and rare find, and proves the reserve is in excellent condition.

Australian solar power company Sunengy is partnering with India’s largest private power utility, Tata Power, to build a pilot floating solar power plant in India this year. The plant will use Sunengy’s patented Liquid Solar Array (LSA) technology that “effectively turns a dam into a very large battery, offering free solar storage and opportunity for improved water resource management,” according to Sunengy Executive Director and Chief Technology Officer Phil Connor.

The University of Canberra has banned the sale of bottled water on campus after a campaign by students concerned about sustainability.  Organisers estimate the ban could stop 140,000 plastic bottles a year from landfill.
