At the Victorian Government’s Climate Change Summit, it’s been announced that renewable energy project will receive a $70 million funding as part of the climate change strategy. Other climate change initiatives include:
- A collaboration proposal on green energy project to be signed by the Government and the Bill Clinton Foundation
- Victoria’s Parliament House to start using green power, despite an extra annual cost of $90,000

NSW Treasurer Michael Costa suspects that Ross Garnaut’s targets for carbon emission cuts will cause unwanted economic dislocation while Victorian Premier John Brumby states confidently that Victorians can meet the Garnaut targets while ensuring the state’s economic prosperity. Opinions towards climate change has emerged as the lastest divide between Victoria and NSW.

The policy to compensate power producers for the effects of the carbon trading scheme has been reviewed by Rudd Government, and energy producers may no longer be given free emission permits or compensation. Coal-fired Power producers argue that without the government assistance, the value of their assets will plunge and investors will hesitate to build new power plants, resulting in power shortages. The government has declared that no decisions will be taken before further consultations with industry and community groups.

Victoria’s desalination plant, which is planned to be built on the land of Bass Coast Shire Council, now faces challenge, as the council refuses to cooperate, claiming the project lacked transparency and adequate evidence of community needs. The government has requested further consultations with the council but has not yet received any reply.

The British Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser has warned that the rush towards biofuels will potentially lead to world food shortage, resulting in social instability and threatening lives of billions of people. His concerns are supported by UN World Food Program Director who highlighted the diversion of food production land to biofuels production. While biofuels are effective means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recent studies have questioned their impact based on other factors, such as fertiliser pollution.

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) has arranged a meeting in London to settle the dispute between pro- and anti- whaling countries, with the assistance of negotiation experts. Some anti-whaling nations have revealed their willingness to achieve compromises with Japan, but others firmly protest restarting of commercial whaling. Japan has declared its intention to withdraw IWC membership if the forum can not effectively resolve the conflicts.
