Leaders in the mining industry will gather in Darwin this week, to participate in the five day conference held by the Minerals Council of Australia. Participants include BP, Fortescu Metals and National Water Commission with contributions from special interest groups such as World Vision and Centre for Marine Studies. Scholars and conglomerate representatives will assemble to discuss the consequences of shutting down mines on the environment and the society. The conference will also focus on the part played by Indigenous interests in uranium mining.

The NSW Government has increased the accessible woodlands for hunters of wild animals. With eighty percent of the forest now open to hunstmen, a total of 390 forests across NSW permit the hunting of feral animals. Chief Executive of the Game Council of NSW, Brian Boyle, stated that about 11,000 feral animals have been weeded out, but although yearly transcripts have been collected there is an absence of any scientific study to assess the impact.

The Iceland Government’s decision to permit the slaughter of 40 minke whales has enraged environmental conservationists. Einar Guoffinsson, the Minister of Fisheries is said to have ordered the diktat, while the a local whaling association has confirmed that three whaling vessels would depart for the seas shortly. This repeals Iceland’s prohibitions on commercial whaling for 20 years prior to 2006, with the Government deciding not to issue hunting quotas until the demand for whale meat in the local markets could be determined.
