According to Greenpeace, Queensland Energy Resources is undertaking a feasibility study into an open-cut mine 12km from Airlie Beach in an area Greenpeace claims overlays the nationally-significant Goorganga Wetlands. Greenpeace warns that a proposed oil shale mine in north Queensland will have disasterous implications for the region.

A Mini-Hydro power station, designed to generate electricity from water released for irrigation has been officially opened in Tasmania.
According to Primary Industries and Water Minister, David Llewellyn, the station is one of the most environmentally friendly renewable energy power-stations in Australia.

Australian Antarctic Division scientists have released a paper that warns of the devasting effects climate change is having on Southern Ocean krill.
According to Dr Anthony Worby, of the Australian Antarctic Division, if we have a significant decline in the amount of sea ice around Antarctica this will threaten the krill habitat, meaning less krill, meaning less food for the whale population who feed on krill in the Southern Ocean.

Tasmania is under serious threat from coastal erosion, which if neglected could lead to some towns sinking down under rising ocean levels. According to Geoscientist, Chris Sharples, quick action is required in order to preserve the towns under threat.

Some of Australia’s most reputed chefs have endorsed a new initiative on genetically modified foods from Greenpeace. Many high profile chefs, such as Maggie Beer and Stephanie Alexander, have signed The GM Free Chefs Charter to promote the labelling of all GM foods and food products derived from GM crops.

The Tasmanian Government has officially declared the Tasmanian Devil as an endangered species. Threatened by a deadly Facial Tumor Disease, it is predicted that without intervention the species will become extinct within 20 years.

Scientists at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania are running final tests on two designs for ocean power conversion. The technological designs created by Sydney company, BioPower Systems, focus on utilising the power of tidal currents and waves.
